Frequently asked questions
What if my baby hasn't reached a milestone yet?
The CDC's 2022 checklists list milestones that about 75% of children reach by that age, so missing one isn't unusual. But if your child hasn't met one or more, or has lost skills they had, talk to your paediatrician. Early support makes a real difference, and you don't need a diagnosis to ask.
Should I use corrected age for a premature baby?
Yes. For babies born before 37 weeks, compare milestones against corrected age (age from the due date) until about 2 years. Use our adjusted age calculator to work it out.
Why did the CDC change the milestones in 2022?
Earlier checklists used the age when 50% of children reached a skill, which led to "wait and see" advice. The 2022 revision (Zubler et al., Pediatrics) moved to the 75% mark and added 15- and 30-month checklists, so delays are flagged sooner.
Why is crawling not on the list?
Because many healthy babies skip crawling altogether or crawl in unusual ways (bottom-shuffling, commando crawling). The CDC removed it as a milestone in 2022.
